Almost every established contractor I talk to says the same thing: 'we've never needed to advertise, it's all word of mouth.'
That's usually true, and it's usually also the reason growth has stalled.
Referrals: the good and the catch
Referrals close at 50 to 70 percent, they rarely haggle, and they cost nothing. There's no better lead.
The catch is you don't control the volume. Referrals grow roughly as fast as your customer base, which means they can't grow faster than you already are. If you want a bigger step, they can't provide it.
Search: the good and the catch
Search traffic you can influence, measure, and scale. It works while you sleep and it compounds — page one at month twelve is easier to hold than it was to earn.
The catch is it takes three to six months to get moving, close rates are lower, and it requires ongoing work.
Where they overlap
Here's the part most people miss: referrals check you online anyway. Somebody gives your name to a neighbor, and the neighbor googles you before calling.
If your website looks abandoned or your reviews are thin, you can lose a referral you already earned. Your online presence protects your word-of-mouth business whether you use it for lead generation or not.
The order to do it in
- Fix your Google Business Profile and start collecting reviews. This helps both channels immediately.
- Build a website that closes the referrals you're already getting.
- Then add service and location pages to open the search channel.
- Keep asking for referrals the whole time. Never stop.
The goal isn't to replace referrals. It's to stop being entirely dependent on something you don't control.
