Reviews are the closest thing to a cheat code a local contractor has. They drive map rankings, they drive click-through, and they close deals before you arrive.
Our family business has over 370 of them. Here's exactly how.
Ask in person, at the end of the job
This is the whole thing. Not an email the next day. Not a text a week later. In person, standing there, while they're happy with what they're looking at.
In-person asks convert around ten times better than any automated follow-up.
The script
'Hey, before I take off — if you're happy with how this turned out, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It genuinely helps a small business like ours. I can text you the link right now.'
Then send the link before you leave the driveway. Don't wait.
Make it one tap
Get your Google review short link from your Business Profile and save it as a text shortcut on every crew phone. Any friction between the ask and the review costs you reviews.
Get the crew doing it
- Train every tech on the same script — it should sound natural, not scripted
- Save the link on every company phone
- Track who's asking, not who's getting reviews
- Recognize it in the weekly meeting; a small bonus per review works too
Respond to all of them
Every review, within a couple of days. Thank the good ones by name and mention the specific job. For bad ones: acknowledge, don't argue, offer to fix it, take it offline.
Future customers read your responses more carefully than they read the reviews.
What not to do
- Never offer anything of value for a review — it violates Google's terms and can wipe your listing
- Never buy reviews. They get detected and removed, and the account gets flagged
- Never filter — sending only happy customers to Google is against the rules
- Never ask for them all in one week; a sudden spike looks exactly like what it is
The math
Ten jobs a week, asking every one, converting three. That's over 150 reviews in a year from a routine that costs you ten seconds per job.
