Fair question, and I'd rather answer it honestly than pretend my job is safe.
What AI can do on its own today
Generate a decent-looking page. Write passable generic copy. Produce a working contact form. For a simple one-page site, that's genuinely enough.
If that's what you need, use a builder and save your money. I'll tell you that on the phone too.
What it can't do
- Know that roofing customers need the insurance claim process explained before they'll call
- Know that your HVAC site needs emergency service above the fold and financing on the replacement page
- Decide you need eight location pages and which eight towns
- Notice that your best jobs aren't in your gallery
- Tell you the thing you're planning to spend money on is a bad idea
The real distinction
AI can build a website. It can't build a strategy, and a contractor website without a strategy is a brochure.
The difference between a site that looks nice and a site that produces calls is entirely in decisions made before anything gets built.
Where this leaves designers
Anyone whose only skill was assembling a template is in trouble. Anyone who understands a specific industry deeply and uses AI to build faster is in a better position than ever.
Same as any trade. The tools got better; the judgment still has to come from somewhere.
