What Is Local SEO? A Contractor's Explanation

No jargon. What it is, what it isn't, and what it can realistically do for a contracting business.

Local SEO is the work of getting your business to show up when someone nearby searches for what you do. That's it. Everything else is detail.

The three places you can show up

  • The map pack — the three businesses with the map at the top. Highest value by a wide margin.
  • Organic results — the regular blue links below the map.
  • Ads — the paid results at the very top. Different discipline, different budget.

The four things local SEO actually involves

First, your Google Business Profile — categories, services, photos, posts, reviews. This drives the map pack.

Second, your website — a page per service, real location pages, fast load, proper page structure.

Third, citations — your business name, address, and phone listed identically across directories.

Fourth, reviews — volume, rating, recency, and your responses.

What it isn't

  • It isn't a trick or a loophole. Anything that feels like one will cost you later.
  • It isn't instant. Three to six months for meaningful movement is normal.
  • It isn't guaranteed. Anyone promising position one is selling you something.
  • It isn't one-and-done. It's maintenance, like everything else worth having.

What it's realistically worth

For most contractors, ranking well locally means a steady flow of inbound calls from people who found you rather than people who were sent to you.

That's the real difference. Referral work is great but you don't control the volume. Search traffic you can influence, measure, and grow.

Where to start if you're doing it yourself

Fully complete your Google Business Profile. Ask every customer for a review. Build one page per service on your website. Make sure your name, address, and phone are identical everywhere.

That's 80 percent of the result for a fraction of the effort. Do that before you pay anyone for anything.
